We are 1 or 2c better. 5 to 8c! I can't wait for this dreary, dull and dank weather to finish! At least give me sun please!

Hi,

A straight 3C for today.

I wish the forecasters would change the record because the needles well and truly stuck in the groove.

Yorkshire and Humber
Forecast Summary
  • Today
A cold and grey day with widespread low cloud, giving hill fog and occasional drizzle over the hills, perhaps with icy conditions at high levels. Mainly dry in city areas. A chilly southeasterly wind will be notable along coastal areas.

  • Tonight
Remaining similar into the evening, with most urban areas dry, whilst drizzly and foggy over hills. Some outbreaks of rain are likely towards the end of the night.
@roadrunner :DI wish I won the lottery and could afford to go to the States for a visit. I only had two pics of Florida.. Wind and rain blasted palm trees during a storm and happy faces in sunny DisneyLand:eek::D. Just went out and it threatened to snow. Tiny flakes in the air. But the post office is still a goldmine, very busy with punters!

Our local post office closed before Christmas alp; the postmaster told me he couldn't make it pay; I thought it strange that he would close before Christmas with Christmas being the busiest period? Another post office suddenly closed the other side of Huddersfield due to laundering £millions. We have a number of other post offices to choose from and yesterday Bron and I visited one for the first time having looked up its location on Google Maps. It was like stepping back in time to 50 years ago; it was a post office;off license and village general store all run by a single aged lady; as I entered the PO I almost fell over a greetings card stand just inside the door; the reception area was tiny and one very rough looking guy was at the shop counter being served; pity this guy didn't understand that he was supposed to collect the items he needed first then go to the counter; I patiently waited whilst this guy was on his hands and knees going through packets of crisps then he brought a couple of packets to the counter before heading off again to the fridge to collect a bottle; eventually he left and finally the lady moved over to the PO counter there being two separate windows; I said I'd like to post these four envelopes first class please; put one on the scales she replied but the scales were obstructed by a parcel; I finally had the envelope weighed and placed the second envelope on the scales; the lady now had two envelopes I had two envelopes but now I think the lady was becoming rather bored when she asked me if all envelopes were the same? Without weighing the two in my hands I went to the other window and was greeted by her two envelopes and a book of four "Large" stamps being thrust towards me; I paid for the stamps and how quaint as I had to stand outside in freezing cold attaching the stamps with cold fingers in blinding sunlight before posting in the post box; where was Blackie now when I needed him; I thought all the envelopes were aligned but I ended up attaching a stamp in the wrong corner on one of them. I thought I had just visited Arkwright's store it being so old fashioned; pity Granville wasn't there though to cheer this lady up; I'll not be visiting this post office again. For over ten years all I've ever done is hand over envelopes to the postmaster and pay the money; I must be getting idle? :(

In future I'll drive over to Kirkheaton PO where two friendly staff are on duty whom I simply hand envelopes to; I'll put up with the poor parking it being a small price to pay for such excellent service. :):):)

Kind regards, Colin.

I know the post office saga. We are a little hub near a "busy" historical market town. We used to have a NATWEST, a Lloyds, half a Santander and a big and spacious post office. Quite good for a small hub 10 minutes' drive from town. But last year, the business rates killed off a lot of people. This country is ruined by toffs who have landed aristocrats or stockbrokers as parents. These toffs went from Eton to Oxbridge and ruin the countries as chancellor or PM. They are never streetwise enough to beat those drafting PPIs which waved through expensive academy and hospital building projects which are impossible to fund or discharge. Suddenly, the government wanted money and woke up last year and slapped a lot of businesses with proper rates which should have been introduced GRADUALLY!

Any way, to cut matters short, these impossible rates drove a lot of businesses up the wall and the banks all upped stick and left. When this woman complained very loudly that our post office was going, I emailed the CEO whose assistant assured me that this one wouldn't be closed. I told the CEO that all banks would be closed and the presence of a post office could take over the roles of banks. So now they are still waiting for the Post Office to be sold and they would move into a shop whose workers think that everybody walking in could be a potential thief. My English neighbour was very cheesed off when he was followed around. Hard one to call as a small business can't even write off theft so easily as big chain stores. But this shop is a dump.. with big cracks on the floor ... I'm dreading the day the post office moves..

Hi,

I'm ashamed to be British these days alp. It's now all greed and selfishness.

What happened to Great Britain after this;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_Revolution

Great Britain was admired the world over for it's industry but look at great Britain now when stores are being forced out of business due to high council tax. Great Britain though is still excellent at building Millennium domes and huge sports arenas such as the Olympic Stadium; closing towns and cities for cycle races whilst industry is in free fall.

I wonder what both the above engineers would think if they could see their country now; the last decent engineer I know of was the late Fred Dibnah? Kids are leaving school unable to do the simplest thing these days other than text each other. I'm totally biased having been brought up of a time when Great Britain was indeed great.

I've previously posted the link above but it's worth posting again for the enclosed video showing where I worked for a number of years this being Wormald & Walker in Dewsbury a huge blanket mill. I started initially as "weftman" in fact there were two of us and we had this huge number of looms to keep supplied with weft. The mill buildings remain as industrial units. Wormald & Walker owned three huge mills in Dewsbury.

Hardly on topic but industry now matches our climate?:mad::mad:.

Kind regards, Colin.

See, it's cold everywhere! Look at this poor boy, poor in every sense, probably not in spirit!

Boy's hair is completely FROZEN after he walked an hour to school on a harsh winter morning in rural China (and there was no heating when he got there)

Nowadays, councils are worried about being sued and I was gobsmacked when a news commentator complained about Gove,. a former Education Secretary, being the cause of all teens' mental problems because of his education reforms. We did much more homework and it is needed to consolidate what one has learned. But the children in this country seem to be so precious and their vocal and militant teachers don't help.
