New Years Day Cabbage, Turnips, and Radish on a back-drop of winter cover crop. New Years day cabbage is a traditional leafy green that's associated with wealth and fortune here. Another is black-eyed peas which we will be having later today canned from the garden.

It's nearly 10.30am. The temperature is 0c. it's very frosty out but with clear blue skies. We've had a lot of rain in the last few days and more promised for the week-end.
My golf course is closed as it's too wet, not that I was intending to play before the middle of next week.
There's nothing I need to do in the garden and the shed and garage are tidy. I've some shopping to do, but that's about it. I'm presently watching tennis from Australia on TV.

It's now 3.00 pm. The temperature is up to +3c. now and it's still sunny. So although I wasn't going to do anything, I pruned the last two wisterias on the back of the house.
Yes, I needed the ladder, My wife reluctantly said I could because I told her, if I didn't do it, it wouldn't get done. It didn't take that long.

More rain, low temperatures and possibly snow, is forecast for the week-end.

I also gave the two main patios a dose of "Wet n' forget.
My reasoning being that it, plus the low temperatures expected tonight, should kill off anything on them.
I also gave all the roses a dose of Sulphur rose. There's a lot of tiny shoots on them and I want to get ahead of any black spot. A vain hope as we always get some roses affected.

My garden is currently buried under snow and frost but I have a couple mars hydro's not currently in use and thinking about growing something.. more for fun. Usually I use them to grow those strange looking plants that have a unique smell and often end up on pizza or in rolling papers lol, but I am thinking something different for a change. maybe saffron if I can find the corms online this time of year.

Saw a lady down the road who has a large heap of well rotted manure. The top of the mound is covered with buttercups, which made me think it is probably not contaminated with weed killer. It has also been there quite a while anyway. Did two runs with my little fiat 500 and collected quite a bit.
I shall return.

I bought some about Sept, and I think they arrived Oct. with instructions to plant immediately. I didn't expect to see them 'til Spring, but they came up straight away , with long, grass like, leaves.
It is going to be our first really cold night tonight, damage assessment in the morning

My curiosity has to ask, what kind of manure? Not that it really matters.. free uncontaminated manure is gold regardless.

This morning I checked on the tomatoes I thought were sprouting, I was wrong, I have a fine crop of fungi. Might have to buy some more moneymaker seed.

It's dry but, I've nothing to do. So I could have played golf.

Err. No I couldn't. Because it's a bit wet. They sent me this video with an apology.

They're going to check again on Monday. The course does drain quickly, but won't if the River Mersey is high. The sluice gates through which our course drains into it, will be closed by the pressure of the high river water, they won't re-open until the water level in the river goes below the height of the sluices.

They play water polo, can't you come up with an aquatic version of golf? :)

Here the nut crop (mast) is on every other year cycle...big one year, sparse the next.

No gardening today, after the "severe weather" warning given by the BBC for all areas last night.

Well, it wasn't quite that.

I often refer to our location as "The Tropic of Trafford," as the weather is mostly mild, we are protected by hills on three sides.

So this is what we got last night.

An inch and a half of snow.

The sky is overcast, but the air is still and the temperature is slightly above freezing.

Already the snow is starting to melt.
