Started the spring tomato planting out today. It is a few days earlier this year than normal, but the long-range forecast looks good for once having danced around the possibility of another polar vortex later this month.

I'm trying out a new to me tomato variety this year called the German Johnson, an heirloom indeterminate variety that has done well in the southern USA for many generations. A few of those, a few Cherokee purple, a few Romas, and a sweet 100 will make up my stand for this spring.

I found the saw attachment supplied with my Fiskars telescopic pruner. I'd never used it. I even took the bracket for it, off the business end of the pruner as it got in the way when I was using it. Anyway, I taped it to a long pole and using a ladder to get to them, cut off some more quite thick branches off the silver birches.
Only a couple of the very top ones hang over our garden a bit.

The blade was surprisingly sharp. There's three full bins of branches, ready for collection tomorrow.
Still a lot more to clear, including some quite thick branches, which will need the chainsaw, (when it gets a new blade).
I think another two weeks of bin collections should see the job done and we can leave the garden nice and tidy.

We're not sure if the owner will ever comer home from hospital, due to his disability. As he has no family, he might end up in a care home.

Up a ladder with a saw on a pole? Surprised the missus didn't have a heart attack, hope you weren't too sore the morning after.

She couldn't see me, the garage and shed are in the way.
I do a lot of stuff out there (like this) of which she knows nothing and I don't bother to tell her. That would be asking for trouble!

Sore?
I played golf in the morning the following day, (up at 7.00am) then did the shopping after lunch!

still moving leaves out of my main perennial bed. have to get the Liriope cut down to ground using the weed wacker. I did not cut the Liriope down last year, regretted it. cleaning up around my Helleborus's, getting rid of winters dead leaves. So many twigs and branches to pick up for the burn pile. My hardy geraniums still looking good with leaves around them. Have to post for local folks if they want some hardy geraniums.

It was sunny for part of the day which made it warmer, but it was cold when it went in.
Presently only +6c.
So I did nothing other than 5 loads of washing. Not that there was much to do in the garden.
I've ordered a new pedestal mixer tap for the kitchen sink. The present one has gone rather stiff. It should arrive tomorrow or Friday.
"Just another of many jobs."

I completed four micro prairie burns today. Weather could not have been any better for a safe burn. Thoroughly watered down the lawn all around them, then started the burn on the side that the wind was blowing toward. That creates a slow and controlled backwards burn.

It's dry but still cold, so I won't be doing anything in the garden today.
My new tap isn't coming until tomorrow. So I've not much to do. I'll be watching some of the golf on Sky from Sawgrass in America from time to time, it'll be continuous coverage until 11.00 pm tonight.
When I turned it on half an hour ago, I thought at first it must have been a recording from last night.
It was sunny, but there were long shadows and thousands of spectators lining the fairways. Then I realised that it was 7.30 am over there.
That's how addictive is this sport.

Onion bulbs are finally growing nice tops now that I am watering plants. Soil is very dry with no rain for a week it was 80° yesterday. This time of the year we typically have 6 days of rain every week March to May. Moles have found the onion plants the whole 3' x 4' patch is all mole tunnels I can see soil cracks where soil is lifted up. Moles have probably found seed potatoes also but I don't see evidence of tunnels. We live in 1 of those stupid houses where the do nothing front yard is much larger than back yard. Front yard is all mole tunnels its like walking on bed mattress shoes sink into the soil if your not careful you loose your shoes. We have never had this many moles I think the exceptionally large potato crop last year caused a massive over population of moles. 6" of rain forecast for tonight and tomorrow and 60 to 80 mph wind. Living in tornado alley use to not worry me I hope storm fizzles out or go north into KY like it often does. Our weather is 20°f above normal it is warm enough to plant, tomatoes, corn, beans, peppers, but we could still have 5°f weather with 8" of snow before last frost April 20. Up date, there was NO 80 mph wind, 30 mph at the most.

Temps soaring here also today...time to start harvesting celery. I've got about 8 more bundles remaining in this year's crop. Hopefully it won't bolt to seed before we can use it all.

Your celery looks larger than mine. Do you grow celery all summer in 100° weather? I read online celery needs to stay wet maybe TN soil is too hard. Maybe our celery needs to grow in shade? I don't know what to do to get better celery wife loves to go to garden to get celery when see needs it.

No, celery is a cool weather crop. Seeds started in mid-Sept and freeze protection provided when required. It needs a long growing season.
