Just a bit of wisteria pruning.... Well... a lot really.

It's an almost weekly job from now and into the Autumn.
This is a good reminder for me because I need to trim all the hedges in my front yard. I also have some Poison Ivy growing next to all three of my Dogwood trees. I need to kill that stuff in such a way that I don't hurt the trees as well. The stuff is relentless.

We are very pleased with our raised beds in the lower part of the yard. The tomatoes are growing like mad, along with the cucumbers and squash. We have a bunch of chard as well. I'm glad they are doing well! We have cabbage planted, but some insect has decimated those plants even though my wife sprays them down with Neem Oil. Next time, I may build a small greenhouse sealed up to keep insects out. It's so frustrating to have a good crop only to have most of it ruined by stupid insects.

What kind of insects? I only started using diatomaceous earth this season but it has gotten rid of a LOT of pests for me so far. I think part of the key is using it as soon as you notice a pest before they breed and get out of control.

Moved the kitchen waste compost bin. It involved cutting a piece of old board to size and bedding it down flat. Quite a bit of work for the leg. That and some general tidying I came in and dropped off with my leg up on a pillow. Had a dream that there were onions growing in th wound in my leg, a bit like the leeks in their trough in the ground. I was quite pleased, they were doing quite well, then I wondered about the roots left behind in my muscle when I harvested them, and I woke up. :)

Cut some Herbs and that was it.

My wife went outside. What you doing? I put windows up on the car because it is going to rain.

Who told you that? They are lying because it isn't going to. LOL

We have little caterpillars on the cabbage, and we have tons of Japanese Beetles. The beetles we are capturing in beetle traps, and then we feed them to our chickens. We use diatomaceous earth for the dust baths for our chickens, but we haven't ever used it in the garden. How are you using it? Are you just sprinkling it on the soil around the plants, or do you use food grade and sprinkle it right on the plants?

I mowed the lawn today. We've been getting rain off and on for days, and so I haven't been able to mow due to the grass never drying out. We've had a couple of dry days, so I got to mow it today before the next thunderstorm this afternoon. My wife did some trimming of things around the yard while watching our chickens free range a bit in the yard. I've had a headache all day, so now I'm relaxing in my rocker/recliner with a big bottle of water to rehydrate.

I use the food grade and sprinkle it on the soil around the plants and on them, both top and bottom of the leaves. I had a lot of cucumber beetles eating the leaves on my cucumber plants but they disappeared once I started using the DE. I also eat it myself, a spoonful a day in water to flush out toxins in the body. Sounds odd but a lot of dr.s recommend it. Also great for pets to get rid of worms and stuff. I am not going to eat it permanently but for a couple months then stop and do it again in about 6 months and so on.

We went to the nursery today and bought some plants and soil. HUGE sale today. We got $30.00 plants for $5.00 each, and bags of 25 cu/ft. of planting soil for under $4.00 per bag. They also had some plants on the $1.00 table there, so my wife picked up some there as well. I have no idea what she bought, but the price was right!

Hot and very humid today. Probably not going to do a whole lot outside today. I don't mind the heat, but we are going out to dinner with some friends later this afternoon, and I don't want to be all tapped out from working in the heat all day.

I've been waiting for those sales to start. I have found some really interesting plants in the past that I would never pay full price for but buy them up when they are 50-75% off. Also a good time to buy garden supplies for next year. I really need a new hoe, the one I have the end keeps popping off lol. Also wouldn't mind finding some of the fabric grow bags if they are on sale.

Same here, daughter bought it for me and the mechanical principle holding it on is never going to work in the long run, the old one slid over the handle which was thicker at the business end, so every use drove it harder home

Sorted a bit of ground I grew potatoes in last, found a fer small ones. Filled a few bags with weeds then put a shovel full of compost, an odd small potato and a bit more compost in and watered them a bit.
