Very smoky this morning, forest fires still raging. I'm still going to bike down to the river anyways.
Very sad that the fish and wildlife officers had to shoot and kill a mountain lion here in the city last week. The big cat was showing no fear and it was just a matter of time before it would have attacked to kill somebody.

@johnny canoe Have you entered the sunflower competition? Those sunflowers are tall and big .. Mine are small and short, stumpy even. Lovely lilies and nicotiana.. Love that bicolour flowers under the brolley..

The forest fires will certainly flush out the big cat. Do the Canadians keep guns at home, too! The very thought strike fear into my heart!

Today, went to Nymans in Sussex, a beautiful county. You can see the house from the ruins captured here. The estate overlooks the surrounding areas and boasts of lots of very old trees.

The old trees frame the house beautifully.

I would love to have a conifer like this - not growing upward.

These two are called Bill and Ben - coastal cedars and can grow up to 1000 years old.

@alp A very beautiful place! (y) I wonder how many years the tree is in picture # 3?

Don't know its name - flowers from a big tree.

Eucryphia nymansensis, probably.

@johnny canoe
I always admire your garden. I can not find an old grade of Nicotiana, which had a good and strong flavor. Here now selling "improved hybrids" that have lost their flavor. Does your Nicotiana smell?

Hahaha sure "WOOD" :)
Lovely pictorial as always @alp.

Somewhere over the Rainbow
A view of the pergola this evening after its first lick of paint/wood preserve. I think I am going to screen the back with split bamboo 3 canes interwoven along the width to act as a wind break...should look effective.

Amazing! @Larisa That's the correct name. If I remember correctly, the owner, a Mr Mussel, was Jewish. Because of his love of gardening, he managed to ingratiate himself into the British upper class. That's an old tree, but not the oldest or thickest. Two boys were sliding down one very thick tree trunk.

Many flowers bear the name nyman... , just as Rothchild ...

木 means wood. That word carved is actually bamboo. The bamboo garden is very small, But I love that canopy captured in the photo. @BigC That pergola is so nice and the rainbow completes the charm.

@Logan Thank you. I was saying to my son that we could miss Sheffield Park. He gently chastised me that I always changed my mind. That made me toe the line! So we went and i will post some pics tomorrow.

Hello alp,
Well many of us do have guns but we don't carry them around with us when out for a walk in a city park or to the golf course.lol
I have 4 rifles under lock and key, 3 have been passed down to me and one I bought when still on the farm. But if a big cat ever tries to get into my house to eat me , I'll blow it's brains out! If one jumps me on the bike trail, I'll just have to wrestle it and be ready to see Jesus.

Hello Larisa,
The purple Nicotia have the strongest scent. I've been collecting my own seed for a few years, and some have no scent, I forget which colours.

Hubby's going to get some more compost for me this morning, be able to pot on my wallflowers this afternoon. I do have a lot though and it's going to take some time. :)

The popular herbaceous borders in Nymans with this fountain as a middle focal point. Kids are attracted to the water like magnet.

The topiares next to the water features are the royal crown. They haven't been clipped to its perfect forms. But they are lovely and we just love it, every time we go there.

Here's the end focal point.
