Rained here yesterday more than expected and quite hard , I got drenched at football . I've been messing with the lawn and the cylinder mower today , verticut the lawn and washed the cylinder mower. Potted on some lobelia yesterday and sort through the plants in the GH .

I bought a Giant Himalayan lily from Harrogate flower show once , it come in one of the plastic bag pots and I left it outside by time I come to plant it had rotted away. You do know they take like 5-7years to flower ? and then die but leave little bulblets behind that I believe flower a bit faster but still years.

@DrCase : The nectary photos are stunning and the petal colour is more striking than mine! Mine is more magenta. Very striking close ups,

Perki strange that they all came like that: in a bag plastic bag, Perki! Mine cost me £12 which I thought was a bit much and the martagon lilies were double the price £7. As I know how to scale lilies, I reluctantly paid the price. Later, I saw that Crocus charge £17 or £19 for the same thing. I was secretly pleased that I paid £12. The delivery took a long time. The reason I bought this was because I wanted to have blood lily or Scadoxus multiflorus the price of which was very reasonable and anyway, there were very few sellers. I was trying to scale that big blob, but the only piece I could detach was already rotting away, so half way through scaling it, I chucked it. I planted it in the only spot I could use which is a bit out of the way. For the 2nd time, my stipa gigantea seeds are actually viable. I bought 2 packs at £2 each. Then I bought 3 packets of Salvia Discolor, and so far only saw 2 tiny bits coming up to make me smile. Seed germination is NOT easy. Bought some Ariane on fleabay @£1.49 and out of the 2 packets, not a beep! One tray was discarded as little worms were crawling everywhere. I also bought 3 crowns and hope that nursery didn't send me other variety. When they came like that, nobody could tell which variety they were.

All the butts received about an inch of water which was great news. At least, the ground had a little bit of water.

Used iphone to take photos and little emperor had switched my machines and now I'm back to Toshiba and I will upload photos later.

The 2nd greenhouse is nearly full and I cleared up the lean to which is to be painted, AGAIN!

Good morning to all. Not so cold, but the heating is ON!

DrCase: And I am a big fan of your stunning photos and perfect flowers. What is the name of this beautiful stunner please? The red is so rich and sumptuous. I can't wait to show you my lilies - tower lilies (well, they haven't matured yet, so they are about 1/3 of their heights), martagon lilies and other lilies. Don't hold your breath as they won't be as spotless as yours or Zenj's!

A certain coffee chain had its anniversary yesterday and some coffee varieties priced at 50p instead of £4 for this occasion. Armed with my club card, I was told that they wanted APP which without a data phone, I couldn't have. I asked for coffee grounds so that I could sow my seeds with this pungent smell to deter SS and was told to go 2pm. @2pm, joined the queue and there was a very tall lady behind me. She grabbed 3 packets of the same. I asked her if they were the best. She said it was milder and more to her taste. I told her I couldn't get them because I didn't have a mobile phone and that I felt like a 2nd class citizen. I let go ahead of me as she was a patron and I a scavenger. She then offered me one box. I was so amazed and I couldn't thank her enough. I said that the staff would have to be told or they would think I had pinched it. She told them and that's how I got a box. I came home and poured one capsule into my mug and to my absolute horror, it was full of grinds. I then emptied 2 pods and used the coffee pump and it was OK. I should have got out more. I never knew that they were grounds in expensive pods. (Well, other bigger and loose versions were gone) I just hated the idea of buying tea or coffee. Now I have 9 pods left. What a clever and wasteful way of making money selling coffee!

Came home with a heavy bag of coffee grounds, too. Here we come, SSss!

alp: I wish I could remember or at least write the plant names down.
Most springs in Arkansas have rain every 3 or 4 days every thing grows good

You're so lucky! Now I have googled Arkansas, I realised that the Clintons are from Little Rock. That's a very pretty red peony. I have red ones and in fact it's smothered with buds, but it's a double.

The sun has gone down and I feel a sudden chill in my spine. What a terrible April: cold, dry, chilly and frosty. Heating on, AGAIN! Or little emperor will moan when he's home at 7.30pm.

Helper came and fixed the window to the 2nd greenhouse, but the handle was most baffling. I love this gas propelled autovent which propels the window to shut and open according to temperature. But the thing was very bent and as rain is predicted, helper just put the window back.

I sowed radish seeds next to the diamond patterned slabs and this was my 2nd harvest. All very zingy but mild - lovely.

Haha! Politics is a complicated thing!

Helper told me that the lovely Tuscany courgette seedlings had been overwhelmed with worms. I had a look at the fibre pots that I had and to my absolute horror, there they were, creeping and crawling and yesterday evening was spent repotting and destroying these nasty fibre pots which attracted big fat slugs, compost gnats and worms. I bought some ariane asparagus seeds and none of them came up. Very annoyed. Pots full of little worms. In the end, I just chuffed the pots out. Never again will I buy these nasties.

Went to Enfield and saw some perennials, weak and struggling young plants. They were such run of the mill stuff. Very disappointing.

All three/four abutilons have overwintered very well here. The whole plants look straggly, but the flowers are not shy!

This was a dirty Viburnum Eskimo! You'd expect it to be snow white.

My understated elegant little acer nearly 20 years old. How time flies and I haven't make my gardens a success. Just a glorious mess!

First of May! How time flies, freezes, frosts and now fries because of the lack of liquid silver.

Went to the allotment and despite taking 2 boxes of seeds, I didn't have enough sweetcorn seeds. I knew it would be a risk to direct sow, but I tried it any way. however, with about 8 seeds sown, I still have to go there today. Mixed in a bit of ash and cinder from the fire 2 weeks ago and coffee grinds, the whole plot smelt like a Costa! LOL! I hope the SS will stay away.

Next door hired a man to work the soil and then the father in law came along and worked for nearly an hour. The father said that his son and his wife were high fliers and probably had no time to dig and when I asked the hired hand if he was to sow the seeds as well, he said probably yes.

Sowed some celery, some spinach seeds and will go again and sow some alfalfa, sulphureus cosmos which they said you could chop and drop and they would be great soil improver.

It actually rained earnestly for 15 minutes. Thrilled. Proper rain which I needed so much.
