Good morning! That's a fun photo! As I have a small supermarket up the road, we have been discovering shelled peanuts everywhere! Very annoying! One day I saw some very bright coloured stuff in the middle patch and on a closer look saw two unshelled peanut enjoying the the moist and warmth ready to spring forth. I removed them straight away. Don't have room for peanut growth.

It rained the whole of last night. One half of the hellebore patch has been cleared and I'm going to incorporate horse manure into it, cover it and overwinter the whole patch. That's the plan! We actually had on and off sunshine yesterday, not a totally grey day as predicted.

Good morning, thanks alp. It's better to have shelled peanuts, there's less waste.
I found that with the sunflower seeds, i get the sunflower hearts now, no shells everywhere.
A bit more expensive but less clearing up and less energy the birds spend trying to open them.:)
Going to do some cleaning this morning, got to clean the conservatory ready for the Christmas tree next month. Might do some gardening this afternoon if it's not too cold.:)

Visitor has left and finally we finished the last bit of the rhubarbs, blackberry and the big icecream. The whole day has been spent watching Carol Klein's Odyssey - Roses, tulips, irises and waterlilies. Stunning close up photography. The whole day has been grey, miserable, cold and damp. Hopefully, tomorrow, the sunshine predicted will cheer up a bit.

Good morning - not so chilly as yesterday. I draped 3 fleeces over some delicate plants, including the rubber plant. Yesterday was the first day we used the greenhouse heater and it fouled the lean to. Quite nasty smell. I now resort to candle burning again. Hard to stay in the living whilst the paraffin heater is on. One more alien foul smell! Will use it when it snow and finish all the paraffin I bought. Bought 3 or 4 at half price.

Incidentally, there is a £5 off voucher from Wyevale till the end of 24 December.

Good morning all and Alp, yes paraffin does smell. My mother used to use it for the house, to subsidize the storage radiators heating, she and my dad said that it was too expensive. She bought my brother one because they lived in a cottage and only had the coal fire. Very small those cottages.

Too cold to do anything outside, so finish off my cleaning.

Alp glad that you had a good time yesterday.

I can't imagine having paraffin heater inside my living room, not to mention that it takes away oxygen. But it was probably normal in the past.

Agree totally that it might not be a day for gardening, as it is damp, dank and depressing; however, if the sun comes out, I will tip the horse manure to the newly turned over half of the hellebore field. Will look for an electrician to overhaul the lights and turn them all into LED lights and if I do the fence, I will add another £5k into the asking price again. That's the plan any way!

Given up cleaning the conservatory, it's too cold and damp, the windowlene won't behave like that, might do it this afternoon.

Got the December issue of Gardener's World mag, only buy it for the free calendar for next year. Got some nice pictures for every month. Got the radio times as well, so going to sit and read them until 10am then take the boys out for their walks. Hubby not working today so extra walks for me.:)

Been out since 2pm and worked till my toes were totally frozen. One half of the hellebore patch has been turned over and wood chips incorporated. the soil is still very clay-y! Nightmare!

Thank you for the heads up, Logan! Will use the £5 voucher from Wyevale to buy the GW magazine. Please let me know if they give away secateur please! Much obliged.

Logan, aren't you happy that you only have 2 dogs to walk now?

Yes, having 5 dogs was challenging especially going to the vets all the time. But they're such a lovely breed that's how we ended up with 5.Got more time for the garden, the housework can wait.

We've got clay soil in places, just keep putting organic matter on top.Builders sand on the corner in the front. A couple of weeks ago i planted a rose and got a spade down and there was builders sand, i kept digging and digging it out. Eventually I gave up and put some good soil on top in the hole and made the hole wide enough.:)

I might spread some builder sand, not sharp sand and work it in. I have 3 great tubs of it.

It didn't rain here at all. Not like in Lake district! It was just cold. Tomorrow I mix for England.

Good morning to all: @DirtMechanic Snapping refers to taking photos, so you know what to do on this thread.

Question to across the pond: When do you use the word laying and lying please? It seems to be you don't use the word lying much and use the world laying instead. When someone is murdered, the narrator of the crime story often says, "The responder found the victim laying on the floor!" It is as if the victim willed or prepared himself to lie on the floor! Please Dr DM, give 2 sentences with lying and laying each to enlighten me a bit! Thank you.

Now, still chilly and miserable. The whole day is going to be grey, Now 1c and 6c is the max! Brrrrrrrrr! Not nice.
