The first Zinnia elegans opened up this morning and it looks like some others are getting ready to follow. The humble Zinnia, maybe, but the pollinators love the nectar rich blooms
The Star Jasmine (Jasminum nitidum) is also blooming now and blooms off and on year around. The hummingbirds use this plant for nectar and the gardener loves it for the fragrance.
I've been trying to find seeds for Greggs Mistflower (Eupatorium Conoclinium aka Conoclinium greggii) for a few years without success. Some months ago The National Butterfly Center in Mission, Texas gifted me with a nice bunch of seeds so i am now trying to get it started and established in my garden. I planted many seeds and this little one is the only one i have found to date. Is it a filthy weed? Yes, it is. Is it ugly? Many people think so. Is it invasive? Of course it is. But, the pollinators are crazy about it, especially the Queen and Monarch butterflies. I almost missed seeing it altogether and it was neglected when i found it and gave it some water and provided a little shade from the afternoon sun. I am rooting for this little guy and hope he is rooting for me too.
