Watered and fed some plants. Repotted Ferns.

Only messed up once on some high dollar plants. Seen a couple Gnats and had hear Hydrogen Peroxide kills Gnats and plants like it.

I should have read more Hydrogen Peroxide kills Microbs. Didn't know what to do so I just put some fresh soil around them.

Last time I planted potatoes in Nov I dug up 28 lbs of new potatoes from 25 plants in April. Seed potatoes need to be cover with enough soil so they can not freeze in winter. I cover my seed potatoes with 12" of soil. There is no above ground plant all winter. I live in TN zone 7. Today I planted 32 seed potatoes.

Nice pictures!

Have been thinking about making my own personal vodka to share.
Potatoes are something I believe can do well here so again thanks for these pictures and story.

I still have some gardening jobs to do, but bad weather is making it difficult. Rain has been stopping me, but luckily it's supposed to be dry towards the end of the week.

50 years ago I lived in Fairfield IL about 100 miles straight east of St Louis potatoes were very easy to grow there. Soil was soft and light weight, 10 minute rain every evening about 5 pm, it seldom got above 90° there. We planted potato cuttings 8" apart about May 15 just lay them on the soil surface then rake soil over them with 15/15/15 fertilizer. Hill them up a little bit once a week for 3 months. A 100 ft row of potatoes produced 400 lbs of new potatoes. I can not grow potatoes that easy in TN it is too hot and too dry soil here is not as good at IL.

Did a whole bunch of leaf removal in the back property, heaped on the burn pile and matched it. all down to ash now. But still trees are not done. Get some leaf rain still.

Started out the day watering some of the stuff in the Greenhouse.

Was going to fill my New Compost Bin but my Son had my Spadding Fork so I used a Spade.

Then I used my New Leaf Shredder. Like that sucker sure makes Big Ones into Little Ones.

It's actually stopped raining and we've blue sky and sunshine!
But everywhere is soaking.

I got into one of the wisterias this afternoon, the one between the tea-house and the shed.
This is the one that gets the most sun, the leaves had started to yellow, so I stripped it.
I do this every year around this time. I also prune off any unnecessary growth at the same time.

The main prune I do between Christmas and New Year. All the blooms come from "heads." I'll reduce the number of branches, mostly the old wood and those at the back.

I managed to collect most of the leaves, using a stiff yard brush. I'd normally go over the lawn and the path with my Flymo Ultraglide mower, it has a big fan behind the blades and is great for picking up leaves, but it was too wet to use it. Even my Grizzly vac. was struggling.

Job done!

There's still this lot from next door's garden to come down. They're a pain but are easier to, "mow up."

It'll be a while before the other wisterias start dropping their leaves.

The one on this pergola I can manage to strip with a step-stool when it's ready.

Same with this.

But this and the one along the side of the house, I'll need the ladder.

The four heathers I bought last year are doing very well. These troughs are a pain to clear the leaves that get under them, I have to remove the pots and drag them out.

P1010233.JPG

They are already starting to bloom.

Last of the apples..

Not really, they are the fruit from the ornamental quince we have along the side fence. These are some I missed removing in September and have fallen off. They'll get binned.

I've moved the acer palmatum Taylor into the little room in back of the garage where we have a couple of freezers. It'll be a lot warmer in there. I did that last year. I don't want to risk losing it like I did the previous two we had over successive winters. It doesn't look like this now, it's already lost its leaves over the last two weeks.

More rain expected tomorrow.

Potted on some small succulents that I had spread out in a tray and which had started rooting and growing. Started making the first part of my stand for buckets growing carrots. Mixed up another small batch of wood ash, manure and compost and sieved it over my garlic. Weeded the troughs of bulbs I replanted a few weeks ago. Some are coming through, paperwhites I think, rearranged them so the troughs coming through are up against the house wall which catches the heat from the sun and the others in front of them to give a little protection from frost. Swept up a lot of wood chips from the chainsaw. Dug the last of my maincrop carrots and we had them for dinner with veggie sausages, mash and greens, a stock 'quickie'. Where I planted 'green manure' seed back in Sept. the only things that had germinated were weeds, so gave it a hoe over. I was quite chuffed with that, there has been a lot of rain recently and my basic soil is heavy clay, a couple of years ago I couldn't have worked it at all that wet, it was a bit sticky, but workable after my amendments.
