Pulled a few weeds today and tried to identify some things that seemed to spring up overnight. They are huge too! Anyone have any idea what these might be? They are about four to five feet tall. Could it be pokeweed?

This next one I "think" might be a hydrangea, but I'm not sure. What do you all think? I'm not good at identifying plants.

Poke weed was my first thought when I saw that pic; I have no idea what the second pic is.

I allow poke weed to grow in my yard, both for the birds, since they like the berries and I use it as a shade plant for seedlings I plant. And the ones that get in the way I use as a chop and drop plant. It has a very deep tap root that is great for accumulating deep down nutrients in the soil.

I knew a gardener who had a weak back and couldn't dig, but he had his clients trained. No digging , it destroys the soil structure, and deep rooted weeds should not be dug out but hoed off on a weekly basis. "They bring up nutrients from deep down and those leaves get broken down in the tilth."
The logic sounded great until you found out about the back.

Lots of watering and little jobs, but mainly finishing the main structure of a construction of mdpe pipe and reclaimed aviary wire that is designed to keep birds from my strawberries. It covers three rows of five plants, so quite large. I also made a construct with two sheets of corrugated that were once the aviary roof and planted seven tomatoes in it. It is on what I think is probably the longest cultivated piece of land, but which now comes under the Eastern side of an oak tree which makes it very dry.

Not a lot today.

The lawn has recovered almost completely, but there's still a small area under the acer palmatum next to our tea-house that needs attention. It gets hardly any sun. Rather than keep putting down grass seed, I've mixed some up with some potting compost in a plastic ice cream tub, added some water, put the lid on and left if on the shelf of the shed next to the window, to see if this will kick-start the growth. I've had some success doing it this way before.

It's been raining for two days here. Finally got some sunshine this morning. My grass needs to be mowed later today once it dries out. Clover and crabgrass continue to be a problem, so I'm looking into getting some Tenacity and giving that a shot. The weeds in my yard just laughed at Scott's Weed and Seed, so no more of that crap.

Sadly, our spinach bolted and I don't know if it's any good to use now. Our romaine looks great, the radishes look good, and I think the carrots and cucumbers are finally starting to do something. I don't know why they are having such a struggle.

Too busy watching the tennis from Roland Garros on Eurosport to do any gardening today.

But I did take some photos of the roses in "The Alley of Shame," the drive next to our house, when I went out to feed the birds.
It's where roses end up that my wife either doesn't like, or I think have performed poorly in past years. They are up against it as it gets little sun. The water is from where I washed out 'arrys feed station base over the drain, a daily task.

I thought I'd start a new thread that can be continuously updated by everyone any day of the year. We have people on the forum from all around the world, so there is always somebody doing something with their garden. I think it would be nice to check in and see what our members have done. So whether you've been busy today or busy three months from today, here's the question... What did you do in your garden today?

I spent today preparing my vegetable garden. I had tons of weeds to pull. There's some kind of invasive grass that pops up in there, along with creeping charlie, so I pulled as much as I could find. I can start planting in about four weeks, so it's nice to have it all ready for the season! If I remember right, peas seeds can be planted before the average last frost date, so I might plant them soon. As some of you may know, growing fruits and vegetables is only a small hobby for me. I'm not into it as much as other forum members. I grow peas for my pond fish, as well as couple of tomato plants, pumpkins for decoration, strawberries, a blueberry bush, and a peach tree. I'm also trying lettuce this year. Tomorrow, I may add a few native plants to the outside edges of my vegetable garden so it looks a little more showy throughout the season.

Today I put a bird feeder together and did some weeding.

We trimmed a bunch of spinach back, but much of it bolted. I'm not sure if the other leaves are OK to use or not. The romaine lettuce is doing fantastic and it appears that some of our cucumbers are taking hold. The carrots are not quite sure what they want to do, nor are the onions. We just aren't having much success this year with our crops. I need to do more research for this zone and probably have some soil tests done of all our raised beds. We did amend the soil but have no idea where it is on the acidity/alkaline scale.

Need to do some trimming today. Mowed the lawn two days ago but didn't get a chance to trim. We have a dear friend visiting for a couple of weeks so, as always, regular home projects and maintenance get pushed aside a bit.

Planted out a few late beans, my second courgette (zucchini in US I believe) and a good double row of chard. This was on a bit of the garden that has been left since last year as it was so dry and hard. The recent rain softened it a bit and I was able to take the weeds out before they seed everywhere and do a fair bit of digging over and adding compost, it still badly needed watering once I had planted though.
Watered the greenhouses as usual, I have my first flower on a chili , my first time growing them , a pretty flower a bit over an inch across with six white petals and six stamens to match.
