A couple of months ago our little male cat slipped out as the missus was locking up and didn't come back, I found him dead on the road that runs along the top of our cul de sac a couple of hundred yards away. Luckily his sister didn't seem to go that way, preferring the gardens and fields in the other direction, and is always in by about nine o'clock. Last night she didn't come in. We called and shook her food bowl, and about eleven thirty I took the big torch and checked the road for a couple of hundred yards, nothing, it was strange there was anything left in her bowl, we were getting well anxious, then about half twelve she strolled in, finished her food and curled up on a chair, "What's all the fuss?"
sorry about your loss.
