I've never personally worried much about my herbs, as they tend to grow like weeds.
I inherited my first herb garden from former home owners and didn't discover it until I'd lived in my house 2 years. It was on a sunny but dry side of the house, tucked where no one would ever notice it. Herbs in there were going completely nuts. I never watered them, never cut them back, didn't do anything with them and they grew like crazy (rosemary and oregano mostly, and some mint).
Then we moved. I transplanted a couple herbs by propagating them in water (which worked beautifully). Then I bought more and did a container herb garden. So far I love it. I like that it is portable, that I can move it indoors and have herbs in the winter, and that my mint (for example) isn't choking out my lawn.
Other than that though, I really don't stress much over herbs. They are hearty.
