Do you make anything with them or leave them for the birds? I have a spot I can pick a lot of wild ones so if you have any suggestions on things to make with them aside from jam I'd love to hear. I'm sure there is lots of ways to use them, homemade jam and wine is the only 2 ways I've used them.
no i don't leave them for the birds but they do get some. I let them completely ripen before picking so I don't have to use a lot of sugar. Mainly i freeze them and use in mixed compote and summer puddings. I have put a few on my porridge. Could do a gooseberry fool.

I realized this year you need to let them hang on the bush for a while. When they look ripe leave them on there. Otherwise they are not sweet. I always thought they were sour but they are sweet if you give them enough time. I read that once they soften they are ripe. This year I started tasting them when they are soft. I Keep tasting until they start getting sweet. My two kids really liked them. Just the peel is a bit sour.

Hinnonmaki Red and Black Velvet are really sweet. I almost pulled them out to make room for something else. Glad I waited and yes the birds do eat them. Guessing they never gave me chance to get the fully ripe ones. This year there was enough for everyone. Definitely keeping them.
