What keeps groundhogs out?

Well, we put the poison down a couple of weeks ago. I've seen a couple of critters since then, but not any in the last few days. My husband tidied up the mess they had made in the basement and, as of yesterday morning, there'd been no new "excavation." I'm feeling tentatively hopeful!
