I guess when you are close to retiring hobby changed ^_^. My 80 yr old mom is unable to tend her garden and we have many deers, squirrels and chipmunks. This year I decided to continue her legacy and I try to have my first shot of vegetable and berries and make it my new hobby. I setup a motion detect sprinkler system on the perimeter and it seems to work, the deer no longer get close. Here are some shots of my first try..

Month of May: This was when I started. I have tomato, bokchoy, eggplant, zucchini, watermelon, canteloupe, and bitter melon.

Zucchini: I harvested the flower after I pollinate the female with a lens brush.my first A.I. (artifiicial inseminated) was murdered by slugs so I started to sprinkle some epsom salt:

After Epsom salt, I could not find any slugs around this morning..

Lanceleaf Tickseed and Spiderwort are blooming throughout my native garden.

Blue Flag Iris blooms at the perfect time; just before surrounding foliage grows taller than it.

I bought this Indian Pink last month, and to my surprise it's about to bloom. The red color is surprisingly bright. I may have to move it after it seeds, because I'd like to put it somewhere where it's a little easier to see. This plant is on the top 10 list for native hummingbird attractors. It's right on the edge of being able to survive my winters, so I hope it does.

...and of course, my native garden is a huge attractor of damselflies. I always seem them or dragonflies sitting on the leaves of my native plants.

Butterfly activity has been few and far between this year, however things were much different this morning when I walked out to the garden and saw four butterflies of three different species all in the same corner of the garden. A Painted Lady, two Red-spotted Purples, and a Giant Swallowtail. The Giant Swallowtail is the largest butterfly in North America. This is only the second time I've seen one in the garden. The others are not too frequently seen in my garden, either.

We have already turned the old chicken coop into a tool shed.

We had previously taken over half of their small run to plant some corn

And we have taken down the fence to their extended run and are building some new gardens ...a work in progress.
