I used this once. What I found was that for the amount of sun I get, the soil dried out too much. Also, it tore easily. But I've seen the thing work well for my neighbor's cherry tomatoes. It seemed too susceptible to wind and he ended up losing his plants to wind damage.

My mother inlaw used one of these last year. She had great luck with it! The tomatoes were small, but they were the perfect size for snacking or salads. She hung two of them in full sun on her porch, but she did have to water them heavily twice a day. If I remember correctly, she told me she poured a gallon of water in each one in the morning and in the evening to keep them moist. I do know she would go out and get bowl after bowl of little tomatoes that tasted scrumptious!

I have not tried the upside down tomato planter, but I have planted them in a hanging basket. I used a cherry tomato "bush" variety. They did really well in the hanger. Like this forum shows, I've heard mixed things about the upside down planter. Probably depends on watering habits and location, just like everything else.

Was she also in Zone 5? If so, we didn't stand a chance in Zone 8!
We are actually in Zone 6. The summers get hot, usually in the mid to high 90s on especially hot days. I see you're in Texas and I am sure it is by no means as hot here as it is there.
