I'm a lover of big tasty, sweet onions from the garden and for the last several decades have grown and stored over 200 big bulbs each year.

As an experimental variety this year, I'm trying the Unzen onion, purported to be a very large bulb onion. It comes from Nagasaki, Japan and is named after a volcano on the island of Kyushu. It seems to have a flat shape and is reportedly a short day onion which is good for here. I'll update the progress of this experimental onion as we go along.

You aren't alone meadowlark.
There's no better eating in all of the Appalachian mountains than a big ole bowl of greasy or white half-runners beans with a big fat sweet onion that's just been pulled fresh from the soil!!
If I was giving a choice of three vegetables I could grow year-round, green onions/head onions would definitely be one of them!!
I always grow Walla Walla or Vidalia but going to try some different varieties this year. They just aren't good onions for winter storage.

Yes, top three for sure. My main crop onion is the Texas 1015 super sweet yellow which I start from seed Oct. 15 and harvest generally late May. They store well and we still have a few left from last year's harvest then the green onions from the seeded bed carry uis through to this years crop in May.

They are short day onion...so not sure how they would do in Kentucky but if you grow Vedalias also short day then the 1015s would probably work also.
