Hi,
I am a new member to this forum.
I own a Tomahawk chipper and struggle with the belt - mine eats belts every 1.5 hours.
I think I have issue with the compression spring of the clutch tensioner.
Could you please tell me what is the length of the compression spring when it is not compressed and when it is compressed all the way.
Appreciate your time and hope to have this info from you.
Tommy

Hi,
It is super tomahawk w/8HP B&S engine.
I cannot find the serial number but the clutch lever has a small chain attached to it.

No numbers left on those belts I suppose. Clutched belts are special. They have a backbone to handle the shock of a sharp start. Yours are not broken? Chewed on one inside side maybe? Cut? Pictures (closeup) of the damage for diagnosis maybe? What is so rough in there?

All 3 belts are not broken but worn out un-evenly.
The belt is from Raptor By Russo Power Equipment - 265-107-P

Replacement for Troy-Bilt: 1902325, 97133, W5L290, W5L290SPL
Fits Troy-Bilt: Super Tomahawk II chipper shredders

Since belt was un-evenly worn out after 1 hour of chipping, I think the clutch spring (Troy-Bilt P/N 20544) could be wrongly replaced. I attached the parts manual as fyi.
Thanks.

It sounds too tight. Its not coming free and burning up in place. The place would be the motor pulley if the cutter is stopped.

I did some reading out of curioisty and some fellows are getting stronger belts, or kevlar belts :A&I PRODUCTS B26K B SECTION KEVLAR BLUE V BELT 5/8" X 29"

Some are changing over to a centrifugal clutch for the 1" shaft from the motor: Noram 160021 heavy duty pulley centrifugal clutch 1” bore

Everbody is talking bearings.

Hope this helps

This is very helpful.
I am ordering some more belts with Kevlar.
Thought the tensioner is not pulling the belt tight enough but your analysis made better sense - belt too tight and chipper stopped, motor still turns and belt section is worn out.
I wish I am mechanical incline to change the chipper to centrifugal clutch.
Thanks for your advice.
