Trouble with carrots

Ok, adding sand, fertilizer, and planting them when I put my peas out. My husband has done most of the watering the last 2 summers, 1 because it was too hot for me to go out, then next because I was sick for 3 months with food poisoning. He doesn't water deeply enough, and I think I was starting the carrots too late.

Thanks everyone for all the advice! I'll be revisiting this thread through the growing season to make sure I remember to follow all this great advice.

Kind of surprised now that I got ANY carrots!
