I've only ever started seeds in direct sunlight. So far it's worked for me and probably because I moved the plants from one window to the other once the sun moved. I've never heard of using a heating pad or heating mats for that matter @Nancy? How would you set them up? I luckily get plenty of sun so I have no need for them but I'm still curious as to how that would work. We recently planted apple seeds and a couple are sprouting. They're in small pots right now and will stay in pots for a while but we're hoping they will survive so we can plant them outside eventually.

Hi... im newvto the forum ahd thought i would share my experience with growing tomatoes
from seed. Here in Hazyview South Africa the temperature is warm year round so it's perfect for growing tomatoes. They like sandy soil with a little rich potting soil added to the seed trays. You can plant them in direct sunlight, no shade needed.
