George, if you want azaleas, etc., be aware your soil needs to be acidic.
Have you tested...PH test....your soil?
Camelias are an excellent evergreen for all round value.....best in acid soils but fine in neutral soils too
But.....that PH test asap George :)
Incidentally, azaleas CAN give all year round colour. Some are evergreen according to variety. They "bud" up early too....I have some with buds now.....and some have wonderful underleaf colours/patina from yellow through to orange :) Here I have to grow them in containers but they are superb shrubs.
Azalea luteum DOES have a scent. Very sweet and nice yellow flowers

Yes, I did say in my statement there is one that does have a scent. @Verdun . However, to me they do not provide year round color. I have the one type that buds up early and has some leaf color. and I also have the yellow one, of which the leaf is just green. and I have the 12 or so in a circle out front, again only green. So for me, that particular shrub would not meet for me the "year round color" . So many better, in my opinion.

Hi,

Excellent question George; thanks for asking because I too am currently looking for suitable evergreen shrubs.

I browsed the web and found J Parkers are selling a selection of six at half price this being £19.97 so I've ordered a pack which are due for delivery either this month or November; here are the six;

Evergreen Shrubs are a must for the garden, they always add colour and interest all year round. You can add to borders or in pots on the patio. We have carefully selected six great varieties which includes one of each of Skimmia japonica Rubella, Euonymus Emerald Gaiety, Ceonothus Thyrsiflorus Var Repens (California Lilac), Choisya Ternata Sundance, Euonymus Blonde Beauty and Leucothoe Scarletta. This combination will work nicely together; they are supplied in 9cm pots.

Three are already mentioned in Verdun's excellent reply.

I also ordered a pack of 3 Pieris Forest Flame at £13.98 the three giving a grand total of £37.94; I'm still awaiting delivery; they are supplied in pots so should do well.

I'm a novice gardener but at these prices I don't mind giving them a try; we too live facing south west but on a steep valley side so drainage isn't a problem at all.

I've also bought Ajuga and Pachysandra for ground cover and will add Vinca Minor (Periwinkle). We have a big garden so I'll be taking cuttings.

Good luck. (y)

Kind regards, Colin.

Pachysandra
When I first moved into our home the previous owners had some Pachysandra in a few areas. We have lots of leaves. it was a pain to rake the leaves out of them. So after two years of that bother, I put an aid in the paper "free Pachysandra" you dig you take. 5 women showed up and got rid of it for me.
Love this shrub, the new color is beautiful and the dangling flowers are pretty.
I like for ground cover the hardy geraniums, gives a nice flower, and the leaves turn a beautiful red in the autumn and they hover in with the snow.

So many beautiful conifers out there. I have been looking at the one with the feathery white on the tips, There is also the blue ones a nice contract next to something red/purple. And not to forget the Dragons Eye, the beautiful yellows with the green on the long needles.

I am looking to beef up an area in the front, so now looking at a fragrant Witch Hazel, blooms very early, will go nice with the later Star Magnolia. I am rambling .

Pieris is really lovely.

Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Irene Paterson' beautiful and seems to have a disease. Beautifully diseased.

Thank you for your advise.
With all the recommendations I have received I have decided what I will be planting.
I hope I have chosen wisely, only time will tell.
Best wishes, George

George: It's not advice. Just sharing of opinions and a chance for us to chatter..
