Would it be a good idea to expose more of the roots and see if anything looks funny? I did have an issue with gnats about 5 months ago, but they haven't been around since

Your picture and the picture of the scale are entirely different. On yours the brown jagged areas are part of the growth process of the stems. It is the starting of the growth of actual bark. Your picture is of an evenly spaced jagged growth not a bunch of random growths. That and the color. Yours are brown and jagged. Scale is roundish and smoother and usually a whiteish color. I don't know what is going on with your plant but I "suspect" it has to do with lower humidity than the tree is designed for by Mother Nature. Jacarandas are a tropical/subtropical plant where humidity is always high.

Thanks Chuck. It is quite dry where I live(Edmonton,Alberta). When I get a chance I'll dig in a little more.

Tried getting some close up pictures, but my camera has trouble focusing that close. Not sure if these are good enough.

The roots look good. I would go with guttation issue. High humidity isn’t absolutely required — ours hovers around 20% or so and the Jacarandas do fine. It might actually be the reverse; high humidity and extra-moist soil.

Water when the soil is dry about 2” down unless it is in a VERY bright situation. They normally grow in full sun and prefer as much light as possible. Expect decent growth - if a bit leggy indoors, but not much flowering. Also, being tropical, they want to be as warm as you can stand/afford. Warmth reduces guttation.
