Hello @Dean , oh dear what an awful way to welcome you to the forums. That tree has had it. It will not survive, and needs to be taken down.
There are a couple of reasons it could have happened. One I can think of is phytophthora, and the other I can think of is honey fungus. In the case of honey fungus you might find white stuff just under the bark at the base of the tree, and under the ground skinny black roots spreading. The phytophthora is a kind of root rot - you could look it up.
Before you plant something else there, it might be an idea to find a reputable tree surgeon to advise, in case remedial action is needed.

You are most welcome Dean, I just wish it was a better introduction for you. Will you be checking the tree? I was thinking, there wouldn't be any toadstools in evidence if it was honey fungus until the autumn.
