Really it might be that for gardeners the most interesting plantations would be those in disrepair, with the grounds gone to seed, so to speak, as there likely would be plants which have naturalized from the original gardens.

In WV there were not plantations in most of the state, but around old farmsteads one can find all sorts of flowers and medicinal herbs once grown in the gardens.

Of course I likely need not mention that in VA are 2 old plantations with the experimental gardens of Washington and Jefferson maintained and very interesting: Mt. Vernon and Monticello.

In today's world of erasing and rewriting the past all of these are targets. All old and made of wood. Just like the monuments are the current target it only takes one going down making nation wide news before a new flame races across the south.

If you have the chance now would be the time to see them.
Monuments were erected during the height of Jim Crow to reinforce white supremacy. They are irrelevant to history. Plantations are another matter; they are real historical remains. Monticello is the most famous example. Tours now include explanations of the slavery there. Just telling the truth heals a lot of the wounds. Truth & Reconciliation.
