Plant Database?

I did a couple of random plant searches (via google) and davesgarden has reinstated the plant database information. So, that competition is back. Of course it would have been folly not to because the response of the search engines was almost immediate. One day lots of traffic, practically the next day, nothing. The response of the DG members came down on them like an avalanche. A lot of members left for that and other reasons and i do not think they will be able to recoup the lost members. I don't think the DG plant database should be a deterrent to starting one here, gardeners have a tendency to like to see things grow, and growing a plant database is not much different. Some sites give some kind of recognition to the contributors to encourage members to contribute...like maybe a banner below the member name saying something like "Plant Database Contributor" after so many pieces of data are entered. There can even be levels of contribution, like after 250 pieces of data, 500 pieces of data, and so on, or any number of variations of that idea.

Brilliant, thanks Beverly - that's a lot of very helpful information. I'll start work on a test version of the software and see if I can get something coded with the correct database setup - I'll post back here once I've got a bit more info .

Just a quick update - I'm setting up a test server at home so that I can start working on this later in the week .
