It's been a mild winter here this year and I can see some plum trees trying to bud, but Feb likes to troll weather wise so I'm not quite sure if we're out of the woods quite yet. Though it's like 50 today it's gonna drop back down to the 30's.

It's actually hot here today. I am sleeveless and trying to figure out what to wear to work tomorrow as it's going to drop back into the low 60s. By Friday it's expected to get down to 50 during the day, warming up again on Saturday... It's a real see-saw at times, but there's not rain in the forecast right now so I hope to get a lot done outdoors this week.

It's not worth the hassle to install a cold frame. All of my planting areas are on one side of the yard, and all of my planting stuff (tools, etc.) are on the other side of my yard. I would then have to snowblow a 200+ foot path everytime I needed or wanted to get to the cold frame. This is not to say I haven't thought to build one, but the cons always out weigh the pros.

Can't put something by the back door?

This time of year the back door gets very little sun. The only two places in my yard that gets decent sun and are easy to get to during the winter is my front yard, and my driveway.

My driveway gets almost too much sun. I have a side entrance with a small "porch" that is not covered. I usually have plants there, but I moved everything in November. Is the driveway long enough to have your plants away from the car exhaust of the street? Don't forget, there are a lot of things you can grow in part shade.

I have cold frames - well right now they are frozen frames.

End of next week the heat goes on in the greenhouse and seedllings will stay in there until the last frost in May...

Oh, good! I know it will feel good to finally get things going. It was another really warm day here today, got up in the 70s! It's going to be 12 degrees cooler tomorrow (thank goodness) and down in the 50s by Friday. After next week though, I don't think we will have to worry about frosts and freezes.

Here, the soil temp is 2C (36F), but in my polytunnel it is 8C (46F) and I'm desperate to get my extra-early spuds in.
Apparently they are being delivered on Friday.

Cold frame would never work in these areas either as I need someplace to put the snow. My driveway holds 13 cars & one mini bus. It widens at the bottom, so all the snow has to be removed.

Wow. Do you have, or would you want to have a little deck porch behind the house like the one in front? You could do a lean-to or small greenhouse to give you a few things like the cold hardy herbs, but wow. That is a lot of snow. I can't even imagine. It makes me never want to complain about heat or even hurricanes. Thanks for sharing pics!

Whoohoo! Congratulations, I know you must be excited for their arrival! I looked at some hampers the other day, but I am also thinking about using wire to make a tower- though perhaps that is more work. I guess I will decide after the weekend. I am working every day through Sunday.

The suns too low to even shed a little light on the back yard this time of year. During the summer all the trees leaf out, and that then becomes my shade haven. That is where I spend most of my days watching my little hummingbirds play. This guy who comes back each year is Mr brute.

Sunday it was sweater weather around 65 degrees, now it is icy and cold about 35 degrees. This area will stay cold until the mid of March, then we will start to see the days getting warmer but may still have a few days of cold weather, then its April and hopefully we can start to work a few hours a week on cleaning up the garden area so that by the first of May we can plant. Our winter is cold but not real long. I use to live in Cleveland Ohio, way to cold for too long.

Sweet! I am putting in more hummingbird and butterfly plants this year. I'm looking forward to being visited, though I've never seen hummingbirds in my neighborhood, just in other parts of town and in the neighboring parish (like a county, only we don't have those).

Wow! That similar, but slightly colder than what we are experiencing here in the deep south. It was in the 60s today, but by Friday it wll be in the 50s and there is a chance for frost/freezing temps overnight/early morning by the weekend. After next week though, I hope the cold will have tapered off.
