So far it looks OK but the soil appears to be DRY. Is it dry where the roots are? Where the roots are it should be kept damp. Stick your finger in a couple of inches deep. When you pull your finger out and it is dry you should water. Crown of Thorns don't like a lot of water. They are happier on the dry side than the wet side.

If the plant comes back it will probably come back from the roots, not the stem, but, the way you planted it is correct.

Yep, but even the little piece was iffy to survive.. Cuttings are from the woody of the plant

The only mistake was keeping it too wet and it got root rot which basically killed it. Over watering is the number one cause of plant death.

Adding to what Chuck has already said, I think the pot is much too big for the plant and it can't cope with all the wet soil. I would plant it in something at least half that size until it starts to recover.
