Harvesting rainwater

We have to channel our rain water from terraces, balconies into cisterns that have filters to remove debris and this water is pumped up to water gardens and flush toilets... We never drink recycled water..
This is a basic requirement for any building.. where I live..

Wow, Maddie, that's amazing. I wish American buildings were designed that way. People could save a lot of money just using rainwater to flush toilets, especially in apartment or office buildings.

How big are the cisterns? I would imagine it would take multiple tanks to supply enough water for each building. What happens during periods when there isn't enough rain?
