We preserve in glass jars. I was thinking canning meant in steel cans. Is there a way of preserving in cans - you know like Campbells soup?

Glass jars are cheaper, easier, and arguably produce better tasting veggies than "tins". Plus, you can readily see what you have...not an insignificant issue in large numbers.

Here we call it all "canning" including glass jars. "Tins" are available online and as well as special seamers for them. Never tried the "tins" myself because we're very happy with the old Mason jars.

Is there a canning device I don't know about?
We "can" the same way you do. Preserving food in jars. Why we call it "canning", I have no idea. I can understand why you asked about
preserving in actual cans if you don't refer to preserving in jars as "canning" like Americans do. :)

I did not know that! Interesting. Wonder how popular they are. I've known a lot of people who can, but never seen anything
preserved in a tin unless it came from a grocery store.
My understanding is that "Tins" are far less frequently used at home than the glass jars. Its just so much easier and better tasting in jars...but its all good.

Wonder if the shelf life is longer in a tin or a Mason jar. Probably a lot of people like me don't even realize tin is an option. Yeah, I can
imagine the taste from a jar being much better.

Thanks. I preserve all the spare tomatoes here. The potatoes, onions and pumpkins go in the cellar. Now about that most preferred veggie - my basil seedlings are up! And the celery has been invaded by slugs. I feel a change coming on - lol.

I would call it 'bottling', we have a lot of bottled plums this year.
Did you know that when canning in tin plated cans was first introduced they sealed them with lead solder, lead poisoning happened.

Yes, I knew that. However that was later I believe. The first "canning" was in jars in France.

Triva search shows "canning" in jars is imbedded in USA culture:

Canning is a method to preserve food in jars at high temperatures for a long period of time
