Quick question on the Israeli melons . . . Do they prefer drier weather?

Well, my climate isn't exactly dry...very humid, generally abundant rain ... and they do very well here.

Great, thank you. I know that East Texas can get some downpours, particularly associated with remnants of hurricanes. I'm anxious to give the Israeli cantaloupe a try, once I can get the seeds to sprout.

Understood. Thank you. We purchased our current home in 2021 after we retired. Like every home in the neighborhood, it has an underground lawn watering system controlled by a box mounted on a wall in the garage. During the drier summer months, it's programed to water once/day, in the early morning. I'm sure that's the reason the Charentais melons split--too much water. I'll need to program the system so that there is less frequent watering of the backyard, where my garden is located. Thanks again.
About your lawn. You will have a much better lawn if you water once per week instead of every day. The reason is that your grass will not grow a deep root system with shallow watering. Get some tuna fish or catfood cans and place them around your lawn. Time how long it takes to fill up a can and set your sprinkler system to that amount of time. One inch per week is plenty for grass and when you provide this much water per watering the roots will start to grow deeper into the soil. You may have to adjust your sprinkler heads so as to fill the cans up at the same time.

Thank you for the watering advice. I had forgotten that, sometime last summer, I had decreased the watering from every day to 3X per week. I'll dial it back even more, to once/week. Thanks again.

And use the cans for time of watering.
