It's been a terrible summer so far, hail at least once a week. I am surprise that my Dahlias have beaten the odds and are flowering like crazy. The first hail storm really set them back, upside is that the plants are half the height but the blooms are still dinner plates.

The Black Dahlia is the popular name for an infamous unsolved murder in Los Angeles in 1947.
However, in the more genteel world of horticulture, the existence of a truly black (or blue) Dahlia remains a non-existent dream.
Still, among the closest contenders so far is the deep, dusky red of Dahlia x 'Rip City'.

I bought quite a few dahlia tubers and now I can share their flowers with you .. only some of them... as some not-so-sweet darlings are still sulking ..

Kelvin Floodlight - a dinner plate which was so heavy that I had to pick it up for photo opportunity - a big yellow bloom
