They are Cannas. Cannas come in a variety of colours, are beautiful and smell so sweet.

Your dad wasn't trying to be decietful lol most people from Mexico and Mexican Americans all know this plant as a Perico. My mom gave me some as well. I'm assuming your father is of Mexican descent or another Latin country. I'm not sure if the Spanish also call the Canna a Perico like us New World-ers.

The flowers in the 2nd photo are near identical to Canna indica "Mactro", Tropicanna Gold Indian Shot that I had seen at the Chicago Botanic Garden. I liked it so much I took a few photos of it and the name tag on it.
