Here we have the wild version and it will grow anywhere, even in the cracks of pavement.
I have seen one growing from the pointing on a brick chimney, and in gutters is quite common. British Rail spends millions each year trying to eradicate them from sidings and line sides. If you don't have the sterile varieties dead heading is definitely a public spirited thing to do.

There are about 100 species of Buddlejas most of which are wood shrubs and trees, though there are a few herbaceous species. Sadly far too many of the really nice looking ones are not hardy in Britain.

Yes, we have two.
There are sterile varieties, but generally speaking it is good to dead head and stop seeds forming as they spread like mad and become a real nuisance. British rail, for example, spends millions every year on clearing them.
