Joe Pye Weed starts blooming mid June, and keeps on until a good frost hits it. As far as invasive, my grouping has been in its spot now going on 4 years, it has spread some, but not more or less aggressive as our bee palms in perspective. A wise garden friend said once to me: you got to go with what works. And if the Joe Pye weed draws lots of butterflies, and comes up nice every year then that is that.
If we are talking invasive, the one plant I have that is really invasive is the gooseneck, I am yanking it out every year and tossing many to the burn pile. I do like the look of the flower so I leave some. Oh yes and my Virginia blue bells are nuts, I am giving them away.
