Ouch, sorry to hear you've been having bad back pain scotkat! :(

I've had a lot of problems with my back, and the best thing has always been to see a physiotherapist. They can ease off any spasming muscles, and help get any stiff joints moving. They can also give you exercises to help fix the problem - it could be either strengthening particular muscles, stretching out muscles, or a combination of the two. If you do decide to see someone it's really important to do any exercise they give you - it can make such a difference.

My problems are all disc related plus scoliosis (had a couple of discs operated on last year) and I have done exercises religiously ever since. Pilates has been a massive help too, I'd really recommend it! In fact it will have been exactly a year since my operation tomorrow, and (touch wood!!!) I've not had any problems since.

Also I was always recommended to use heat instead of ice to ease pain - heat helps the muscle relax and eases the joints, whereas you would only really want to use ice where there is swelling.

Hope you have a swift recovery!

Sorry to hear you are going tru this :( I hate back pain, but I also hate the side effects produced by most painkillers. That's why I have decided to go natural when it comes to treating pain, I am using a very strong oil used to numb muscular pain. It's named "tei fu" and is made by Nature's sunshine :) I really recommend it!

Oh yes, do I know about back pain. It's been a long healing process in my case. Try and see a good acupuncturist, preferably one who practises Japanese acupuncture. A lot of times the pain can be coming from somewhere else, from imbalanced energies in one or more of your organs. Stay away from painkillers, they only suppress the symptoms. I hope you don't need all this and are already feeling better. :)

I am sorry to hear you are in pain. I have had problems with pain in my back and my knees.
I do not like to take pills because of the damage they can do to your liver and other side effects.

First I want to say I am not trying to sell anything just giving information: I could not go up and down the steps because of knee pain, I found a product called Real Time Pain Relief and it works, it is better than anything on the market that I have used, it smells very pleasant just a lite mint aroma. I am now a distributor for the cream because it does work and I know many people are looking for something that really works. Just because I am 69yrs young does not mean I want to stop being active. I had not been able to garden because my knees hurt so bad, last summer I was able to start gardening again and I was so happy. Lots to read at this address about how the cream has helped others http://rtpr.com/main/6121195b/.

Hope this helps.

Hi Pat, I am glad you found some relief with that cream. I was also struck down last year with terrible pains in my knees and hips. In my case it turned out to be malaria parasites that I had picked up when I was in Papua New Guinea. I was nearly paralyzed with stiffness and pain, I couldn't get out of bed anymore. Only after many months of agony and trying to find out what was wrong with me, a specific blood test determined the cause.
Knee pain isn't necessarily associated with age, arthritis or general wear and tear. There can be so many reasons for it.

That's not quite true; ibuprofen is one of a group of painkillers called Non-Steroidal-Anti-Inflammatory Drugs.
If you apply it regularly, it will help, to some extent, if inflammation is a problem.
I particularly found it useful for nerve pain (after a while) including sciatica, caused when I prolapsed two discs.

True or false, it's all up to the individual to take care of his/her body in the best possible way. I personally never touch pharmaceuticals unless there is an extreme emergency or accident of some sort. I haven't taken as much as an aspirin since I was 12 years old. And I have been through some very challenging illnesses and conditions. I survived because I stayed away from conventional medicine.
We all have different ways. I respect every person and the choices he or she makes. In the end, it's the outcome that counts. :)

Fine, but let's stick to the facts, and let's not present them in a pejorative fashion, please.

Ibuprofen is a core drug according to the WHO, and is used for such wide-reaching problems as menstrual pain, anti-thrombosis and mild athritis.
Perhaps if you had been willing to use pharmaceuticals your "challenging illnesses and conditions" may have been dealt with sooner.
Allowing one's body to suffer illness, rather than use pharmaceuticals isn't, imv, respecting it.

For my back pain, I try to do light stretching. I make sure to drink more water, because it's like adding oil to a squeaky hinge. It will help everything operate smoother. Try getting an electric massager that hooks up to your seat and try to watch your posture. It's easy to start slouching when you're in pain, but it'll only make it worse in the last time. Your medical history and the way you react to things will depend on what medication you could take if you want to. Lets remember not everyone responds to medications well or at all. If you have any pressing concerns call up a nurse line or visit your doctor.

There are two things to do for back pain if the pain isn't needing surgery.

The first is immediate (when in pain). You should get a muscle relaxant of some sort. This could be prescription, over the counter or (as mentioned above) an anti inflammatory such as ibuprofen. Try to lie flat on your back and let things relax and even if the drugs are working - don't do anything to further damage it.

The second thing to do is after the pain is gone. Gardening can be an extreme sport - we tend to forget that. Once you have recovered enough to do so, make a point of doing core exercises. Stretching and working out the abs and the back will help prevent future flare ups.

Whenever I suffer from backaches i usually apply voltaren gel to relieve my sore muscles and another remedy that works for me is, soaking the tuna plant overnight in coconut water and drinking it in the morning; it is very effective somehow it relieves the pain from my back.

Normally i just let it pass on its own. You could just take pain killers and get a massage. It depends on what type of back pains though you may need to go to the doctor it could be a serious health issue.
