I got some garlic cloves at the store, and then noticed that some of them were starting to sprout, so. I separated them and planted them. They are starting to grow, and as soon as the weather warms back up down here in Alabama, I am going to take them outside and plant them in the garden.
We have wild onion/garlic that grows here in the winter season, and you can just go out and cut the tops to use in soups. We also have a large garlicy plant called ramps, and I have been harvesting the tops of the Ramp, and putting it in about everything I have cooked this winter. It is supposed to flower and go to seed in the spring, so I am going to save some seed and spread it around. It is wonderful !

I grew garlic last year, but I don't know what kind it was. I had planted a couple cloves of garlic that I bought at the supermarket once they started to sprout a little so I do not know the type. I messed up tho and did not plant them in the fall like I should have so they did not grow as big as they would have had I planted them in the fall. They did grow nicely tho!

I didn't know the garlic would grow from a clove but tried it and found it worked well.

I'm trying elephant garlic for the first time.
I planted the cloves in pots (I too have clay soil) in November, and the shoots are now about 6" (15cm).
Fingers crossed.

Wow, that is so exciting! I definitely had no idea that you can simply plant garlic from the grocery store. I LOVE garlic and would love to have my own fresh garlic on hand for all of my recipes, so I am going to have to try it. I'm so glad I came here...I never, ever would have thought of that!

Congrats to everyone who has tasty garlic coming in. Kudos to you!

So, this years Muzik variety is waist high now with scapes, will harvest the scapes tonight when I get home!!! My other 4 varieties have not started scapes yet. The info I have said about 20 - 30 days after scapes is the best time to harvest the garlic. That means end of June I will have some fresh garlic to enjoy!! YAY I am out from last years crop. My goal this year is to TRY to keep all the varieties seperate and marked so I know what I am planting this fall.

This is all good to know. I haven't tried growing garlic but am looking forward next year. I always buy garlic and it ends up going to waste. It would be so convenient to just grow it so I don't always have to make sure I have it before starting to cook.

I haven't tried growing garlic either and this thread is full of useful information. I believe my daughter will definitely love to grow garlic since it sounds simple and easy enough to do.

I grow garlic in my vegetable patch. I don't have big harvest, but thankfully I grow enough for the family needs. I don't seen buy garlic seeds, after the harvest, I store some portion of the harvest as the seed for the next season.

We always have garlic since 1996 when we moved to a rented house from the apartment. With the big yard, we planted garlic from the excess in the kitchen. In the recent years, I have noticed that garlic plant is similar to grass that it can be a good decoration for the living room. I planted some garlic in a big plastic pot and when it grew like a grove, it now serves as decoration and also a source of garlic for cooking.

This sounds really lovely Corzhens. I believe garlic can look pretty:) And I definitely want to grow it indoors too:)
Lately, I've been adding a lot of garlic to my food. What I love the most is oven baked Camembert with garlic. It's just yummy!:)

Garlic is at its best when it gets exposed to real cold, at least two weeks of it, so get your garlic planted into pots outside if you can, with a view to bringing it indoors after this "vernalisation".

Thank you for the tip, I'll definitely do it. It's been cold here lately and I heard it will be snowing next week, so I'm sure my garlic will do well:)

We plant garlic here in the fall, and harvest in June. This is from this year's harvest--garlic heads given to us by a fellow gardener in Ohio:
HBG garlic.jpg

It tastes nice and "garlicky" but doesn't have the bite and aftertaste some garlic has. I practiced self-restraint and saved three heads to replant, although we wanted to eat up each and every clove!
