Most of mine are phalaenopsis orchids and when a spike loses its flowers and doesn't look like it is going to grow new buds I tend to cut it back to just above one of the knuckles (I'm sure there is a proper word for it but can't think of it!). I've had success with it sprouting a new shoot from the spike after doing that, but I don't know whether it would be different with denodriums.
