I live in New Jersey and the weather has been pretty hot recently. I planted a Fireglow Japanese Maple in a very shaded area within the last two weeks and the top of the tree is losing a ton of leaves. It appears to be dropping them everyday. The leaf drop appears to be working its way down the tree. Anyone know what it could be? I have provided some water like twice a week. I have attached some photos.

Could be wind scorch. Put a stick with a piece of plastic flag to see if it is caused by hot air blowing at the tree. The tree looks OK to me. Don't over water it though. Feel near the root ball area please to see it the soil is moist. It might benefit from a bit of gentle morning sun or dappled shade.

If you're worried, scrape a bit of new bud to see if it is green. If it is green, the tree will fill you with joy again comes April. A good idea to move it to an area with morning sun - a sheltered spot from strong winds or sun! Have a happy Christmas and New Year! Same to your beloved Acer!
