I recently purchased a young grape vine (Hanepoot variety as we call it in South Africa). Since it's winter I trimmed back most of the shoots and now I'd like to start getting it ready for new growth.

This is what I currently have:

What I intend to do is have something like this (blue line is wire):

So my questions:
  1. Do you think that I should first spend another year on developing a stronger trunk?
  2. Would those in the know suggest a double cordon like below, starting with the lateral branches on the bottom wire and training the shoots up during the growth season?

Any and all input would be very much appreciated!
