Other then the christmas tree... what other plants thrive in cold/snowy weather? I have heard there are several plants that grow well in low level light in very cold regions and was wondering what plants anyone suggest. I am planning on landscaping and I want to have plants year round growing. So when the ones that can't survive in one season die, the ones for that season grow. I hope that makes sense.

I usually take my herbs and smaller plants inside during the winter. But some beautiful and colorful plants you can have include: pot marigolds, candytuft, cineraria, and cyclamen. Most of these plants require regular shade and infrequent waterings.

Oh there are way more than just a few plants that will not only give you pleasure all year round but throughout the winter too - in fact there really is no reason why anyone could not have a garden that looks stunning all year round - regardless of where they live - as it just a matter of choosing the plants that best suit the year round climate.

To be honest you can't go too far wrong - if you use a selection of evergreen shrubs or low growing trees to provide the year round structure - interspersed with color provided by evergreen or seasonal flowering perennials - especially as there is such a wide variety of choice in evergreen shrubs - not only in terms of beautiful foliage colors that change throughout the year but also ones that flower at different times of the year too - which is much the same with perennials as there are also very many of those that have exactly the same characteristics.

Brassicas, some trees and shrubs - witch hazel, camelias... It depends on how cold and how long it stays that way. When it comes to edibles you can extend your season by putting cold frames around low growing plants in the ground.

If you are looking specifically for flowering plants, here are three links to articles on plants that provide flowers in winter, some even in the snow. Just remember to check what's appropriate for your zone and I wouldn't leave young plants out in the snow the first year. Once they are mature and established they should be able to stand up to the cold.

Thanks guys, now I just need to figure out which ones will work here. I live in North Central Nevada and plants out here have a hard time because of the intense weather here. Its very hot at times and very cold in others, and it snows... so choosing the right plants to grow here will be really hard. Thank you for all your advice and ideas. Thanks ChanellG for the links I will definitely will look through them.

As I too live in a climate with every kind of climate extreme imaginable - I have to say that although finding plants that will suit your growing conditions may appear at present to be an impossible task - its not actually that difficult at all - in fact I think once you start looking for plants you'll probably be very surprised at just how many there are.

To be honest - although I can already think of quite a number of plants that would be suitable - one of the best places to start - would be to take a look at what kind of plants are not only growing in your area but also what plants your local garden stores or nurseries are selling - as doing that will generally give quite a good indication of what is likely to grow well in your particular area.

You're welcome, @kevinkimers! Since you have to deal with harsh weather conditions you should definitely look around your neighborhood to see what your neighbors are successfully growing and talk to someone local who knows about native plants.
