I always plant Zinnias multi colors flowers they look very nice for 6 months. They attract 100s of butterflies, lots of finch birds, more honey bees than I have seen in years, and humming birds. Seeds are easy to save to plant next year.

I have a location that could use some different flowers but not sure what to plant?

NO marigolds they smell terrible.

Agree on Zinnias...great attractant. My favorite is Lantana, and it comes back every year here...but might not in 4 deg F  The swallowtail butterflies absolutely love it.

Another great attractor is the Garden Phlox, and it also comes back every year here. Very low maintenance and the bees and butterflies love it.

My old standby is sunflowers which I use to trap stink bugs from my tomatoes as well as to enjoy their flowers which the birds and bees love as well...

This year I'm expanding my varieties to include coneflower, black eyed susan, milkweed, lavender, chuxay gard, primrose primula, gomphrena, and bee balm in addition to marigolds and zinnias.

I'm going all in on flowers in hope of attracting more varieties of butterflys which I find fascinating

How do sun flowers trap stink bugs???

Many years ago I planted sunflowers it took 3 months for flowers to become yellow color for about 4 days then seeds were ripe and every bird and every squirl in the area came. 1 morning sun had only been up 30 minutes there were 100s of birds and a dozer squirls after the seeds. I never say anything like that the air was black with so many birds. Wish I had that on video birds were like a swarm of bees then seeds were gone and so were the birds and squirrels.

3 years ago I planted sunflowers plants they finally became yellow and seeds were ripe but no birds came and no squirls came? Something about this sunflower birds did not like the seeds. I left plants stay for 2 weeks thinking birds will come but never came. I cut sunflowers down removed all the seed to put out for birds and birds would never eat the seeds. We have a dozen squirls they would not eat these seeds either.

How do sun flowers trap stink bugs???
I discovered this quite by accident. One year several years back I planted some sunflowers in the near vicinity of my tomatoes. Sunflowers were seeded on the outside edge of the garden but near the tomatoes. Sunflowers are allopathic hence I keep them outside but close to the garden edge.

The stink bugs actually did not bother the tomatoes at all but concentrated on the big sunflower heads instead...where since it was outside the garden, I hit them with Malathion full strength and killed 100% of them. Absolutely obliterated them!!

In subsequent years, I have found this works only if the sunflowers are in close proximity to the plant you wish to protect, in this case tomatoes. Works very well on summer squash also. The stink bugs will move to the sunflowers if in proximity where you can effectively kill 100% of them without using any strong chemicals in your veggie garden. 🤠

Works for me!!
