Got this as a present. Would like to know what kind of plant is it

It's Adenium obesum. It likes lots of light, lots of warmth, and not much water. Think cactus or succulent. When it gets big it develops a swollen trunk base. Keeping it dry if it gets cool is really important and it doesn't take cool temperatures well; above 45F is best.
