Hello,
I have a hedge that seems to be weird this spring / summer. It's like some leafs were 'rolling up'. I take pictures at different time, one from end of May and one from mid June (before I trimmed it). The pictures are (more or less) the same bush.
Someone told me it was 'mildew' but I don't believe that, I have not any white spot on the leafs so I guess it's something else.

Does anyone what this is ? And what I can do about it ? The hedge is about 10 meters long I think, not all the bushes have this phenomenon, strangely only the one at the 'borders' (so at the start & end if you prefer :) )

Thanks for your time.

Have you had any climate anomalies, like maybe windy or from cool to hot, a lot of rain or anything that isn't normal?

Not special... I just know that it rained already a lot this year. The month of June for instance broke the record of rainfall since they start measuring (somewhere in the 19th century).
But the first series of pictures of pictures was taken in May and I find the phenomenon was the worst there than in June.

Weird that it only happens on discrete parts of your hedge. Rules out heat stress or fungus I would think?
Check carefully for insect activity, perhaps some type of insect.

If you have a good garden center with knowledgeable staff, I'd take one of the affected plants in and see if someone can identify the problem.

Once they curl, are they curled from then on? Do they uncurl at some point?

In Ohio, there's an old saying, that when the leaves of the trees curl, it is going to rain soon. Your saying it rained a lot is made me think of that, but it usually happens in the hours just before the rain. Yours curl inward, so probably not...

...does seeing the undersides of leaves really mean rain is on the way? In this case, our forebears were definitely onto something. The leaves of deciduous trees, like maples and poplars, do often to turn upward before heavy rain. The leaves are actually reacting to the sudden increase in humidity that usually precedes a storm...

Have you checked for insect activity yet?
The aphids inject a substance with their saliva before they begin to suck the juices from the leaves. There are chemicals in the saliva that cause the leaves to curl and twist. The curled leaves protect the aphids from the wind, rain, and pesticide applications.

Beyond that, I have no idea. Maybe you could send the pictures to the horticultural dept. at a local university?

If you ever do find out, please come back and tell us! I'm very curious now!! :)
