I think this is a bromiliad of some sort but I can't find exactly which kind of bromeliad this is. When I first got the plant the very tips of the red area started to slightly open and little white flowers were coming out but then very quickly after all the little flowers died and it stopped opening and it started losing colour and I noticed there were tiny little white flies around the leaves. I put some gentle castile soap in with some water and spray the bottoms of the leaves and I haven't had a problem with the plies actually I take that back I see one on there now but anyway I'm wondering if I need to cut the top off or if I cut the side shoots that look like they're growing out there's definitely been a lot of growth in the foliage but no change to the red area. If I am supposed to trim the sides of this planet and replant cup if that's what the side shoots are then how can I do that without hurting the initial plant?

It's definitely a bromeliad; the flower reminds me of a ginger. I have a bromeliad that someone gave me from their yard, but I don't know what kind and I haven't figured out what it needs. I'm hoping it will flower and give me a clue so I can learn how to take care of it.

I have one as well, it's not very demanding, just make sure it does have good drainage in its pot and that you don't over water it. I'd recommend that you don't expose it to direct, bright sunlight for extended periods of time. Indoors, a good lit window will do.
Regards!
