Hard to tell from these close ups. Looks to me like two patches in your lawn dying. Looks like it could be grubs. Grubs are the larvae of Japanese beetles, June beetles, and chafers, among others. These C-shaped creatures feast on the roots of grass and plants. Can you easily pull up this brown grass and there are no roots attached? Grubs feed on the roots and the grass dies. You need to treat it or they will only spread.
