Our Allotment has a potato competition each year based on weights for supplied seed.
This year the notification for weighing came with this comment-

`All potatoes grown from the allotted seed are eligible regardless of condition, so blighted or rotten examples can be included`
Love to hear your views.

I suppose if the criterion is weight, then other criteria such as quality should not factor in. However this does suggest that growing the largest individual potato tuber is more of a fluke than an accomplishment. Perhaps your allotment should also give awards for both highest yield and finest quality.

I suppose if you can determine finest quality, you could also find the largest potato possessing that quality. It is best to agree on a detailed rubric before-hand when making qualitative decisions. Finest quality is subjective, but at the very least, I would say there should be no cavities or discoloration in the flesh, and no discoloration or wounds on the skin. Of course these are all visual determinations, but I would think that they would mostly align with the most delicious, and nutritious potatoes.

Also, what is the ideal moisture content for a potato? An excessively watery potato might be heavier than a 'perfect' potato, so heaviest and best quality might be difficult to reconcile in the same tuber.

You don't ant people touting blighted potatoes round the allotments or everyone will end up with it. I was under the impression that blighted potatoes actually have laws relating to them regarding transport, treatment and/ or destruction, but that may just be wishful thinking.

A visit to Google tells me they do in Jersey, potatoes are important there :)

That is a very good point! Also, as a Southerner, I am sure New Jersey must be full of all sorts of Potatoes, just judging the the phone solicitations I get from there.
