Never had sun scald here, although one extremely hot summer I did have an issue with thickening skins which ended up splitting as the tomatoes grew. I use 8ft stakes here on mine as they are way too tall for cages even with our much shorter growing season. If I had the length of season I'm sure they would hit 15 ft tall.
