Too-Tall Shefflera

Hi, need some advice on my out-of-control shefflera. Bought this about a year ago at your typical big box store, was about 3’ tall at the time. Now, two pots later it is a whopping 10’ tall, about to outgrow my the pool cage.

Question is: can I just cut the main stem? It is at least 2” thick at the top. Will I kill it or will it continue to grow and shoot new stems off to the side once it is cut?

You can cut the main trunk . It will send up some new shoots
