It's getting time to plant my garlic again and I'm wondering if it's okay to push the cloves into the soil while it's still wet or should I try to wait until it dries out? That bed has been under about 8 inches of straw all summer and is in really good condition but I don't want to ruin my garlic. Opinions?

I would just pull back the straw for a day or two until the soil became moist instead of wet and then plant

I guess I will try that. If the rain doesn't quit there is going to be no moist. Maybe I will pull it all (it's only about a 4x4 bed) and just wait for things to dry out. I looked in there the other day and saw some old bulbils that I missed doing very well. These are from a variety of purple garlic I was starting from scratch.

Wait.
Put your garlic in the fridge and, if necessary, you can wait a month.
Moist is absolutely necessary or your garlic will rot before it sprouts.
My experience (which, granted, isn't huge) is that garlic needs far less water than most think.

As far as nature's concerned, it's us quirky humans thinking we know it all.
Well nature isn't catching a plane, and will make its own mind up as to the seasons.
We gardeners have to have the philosophy that we are the servants of nature, if we best want to enjoy its bounty.

My poor garlic hasn't yet made it into the ground or the refrigerator. I will probably end up setting it out sometimes in November.
