Hi, I'm new to this site and I'm hoping to get some direction for a chronic problem. My front yard garden has an incredible amount of thistle that seems to be winning a summer long battle that has me baffled as to what I should be doing to get rid of it and keep it out of my garden. Thank you in advance for your help.

Thistle is propagated by windblown seeds. Some are also propagated by rhizomes coming off of the roots. With the thistle that I have all I have to do is cut it off below soil level. I do this with a shovel. You don't have to dig it up, just cut it. But with the kind that spreads by rhizomes you can either cut off the new shoots as they emerge or use chemicals like Roundup. Cutting them off will eventually kill the plant. But, as long as there are other plants upwind of you, you will always have them.
